Harriague |
A synonym used in Uruguay for the Tannat
varietal, a tough and rustic grape that can
produce heavy and tannic red wines. Tannat is at
the center of a revival of sorts of Uruguay's
wine industry. If yields are low and at high
elevations Tannat can be coaxed to produce some
very rich reds that take well to oak and can
last for a decade or longer. |
|
Hárslevelu |
A Hungarian varietal crucial to the production
of Tokaji dessert wines. Tokaji is the wine of
Kings and has been revered for centuries. It can
last almost as long. Hárslevelu brings heavy
aromatics to be blended with the body and
finesse of Furmint in the production of Tokaji.
As a table wine Hárslevelu can be coaxed into
full, viscous and rich wines that, although
subtle, often possess fine aromas of stone
fruits and citrus and a lovely golden color. The
name Hárslevelu is Hungarian for 'linden leaf.'

Hunter Riesling |
A synonym for the Sémillon varietal that is used
in the Hunter valley of southeastern Australia,
where it is used to produce a wide range of
wines. Hunter Rieslings can vary from very dry
to very sweet and can take well to extensive
bottle aging. |
|
Huxelrube |
A German hybrid created by crossing the
Chasselas with a variety of Muscat. Known for
huge yields and not so huge flavor. The
Huxelrube can achieve high levels of both
ripeness and sugar. This has made it somewhat
successful in England where high levels of
acidity are common so the high sugar levels are
beneficial to balance. The best examples come
from the Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions of
Germany where it can produce pleasant wines
similar in style to Muscat and are best consumed
young.
